Getting scholarships is an effective way to travel and study abroad.
Once we are done with our high school education, a few realities tend to hit hard. For many, it’s the fact that life does go on after high school, secondly is the need to find a course that you find fulfilling and would be competitive in the job market. Third is hoping to find a way out of this special branch of hell named Kenya.
Well the good news is whether you are pursuing your bachelor’s degree or masters, scholarships are a good way to find your sense of adventure and achieve your goals. Here are some of the top rated scholarship programs noted in Kenya that can be beneficial to you
- Ministry of Education scholarships
Unbeknownst to many, the ministry of education has thousands if not hundreds of scholarships running all year round. These scholarships range from a variety of online, part time full time, local and international programs. These programs do require a bit of research in to them to find your best fit. I should note that they are the most reliable as a result of partnership with the government. The main reason so many of these go unutilized is due to lack of information.

- Education USA scholars program
If you have a sibling who is likely to score a straight A in their KCSE, advise them to look into this. The mentorship program that goes along with the scholarship is top tier. However, this is a time sensitive scholarship as it has a rigorous selection process and the prospective candidate needs to give their best throughout the process. In addition, patience is key especially as one goes through the various vetting stages.
- DAAD scholarship
These scholarships are for graduates and postgraduates from Sub-Saharan Africa. For a master’s scholarship, one must have a first academic degree, while for a doctoral scholarship, one must have a master’s degree. There are 3 PhD and 8 Master’s slots available at JKUAT.
This German based program focuses mainly on master students. The scholarship also includes contributions to health insurance in Germany, appropriate travel allowance, a study and research subsidy as well as rent subsidies and/or allowances for spouses and/or children where applicable.

Commonwealth Master’s Scholarships are for candidates from eligible lower and upper middle income Commonwealth countries, to undertake full-time taught Master’s study at a UK university. The most important thing when applying for the above is to demonstrate the positive impact you hope to make in society whether here in Kenya or the U.K. or both
