First of all, thank you for having an interview with us it’s an honor?
Thanks for having me
Kindly tell us something about Dj Queen Mish?
I was born and raised in Nyeri, I come from a family of 5 kids all from a single mum. my real names are Joyce Wairimu.
When did you start DJing and what or who were your early passions and influences? What is about music and/or sound that drew you to it?
I started djying way back in 2017, I was taught by a Dj by the name Dj Bua. Actually funny story sometimes I would walk from Embakasi to Dandora coz that’s where DJ Bua lived due to lack of transport sometimes but because of the passion I had which I still have I was willing to walk all that way, In 2018 I joined Codered under Dj Stylez which am forever grateful but I left later on around October to traverse on my own.
How do you feel when you’re DJing?
Ecstatic
Could you take us through a day in your life, from possible morning routine through to your work? Do you have a fixed schedule?
First thing I do when I wake I must give thanks to God for yet another day, then check my phone for any messages, missed calls, or any emails, I then proceed to prepare my breakfast. If it’s a gig day I then start preparing myself, if it’s not a gig I attend any meetings that I have not necessarily for djying.
What have you learned since you started out as a DJ?
Being a female Dj so many people tend to be uncertain about your work. This may lead to being exasperated, depilated, and also self-doubt. But I have learned to be stoical because I believe everything works out at the right time.
What were some of the main challenges and goals when starting out as a DJ and how have they changed over time?
The main and most challenging was how to navigate through an industry that was male-dominated, but am happy that so many female DJs have come out coz am all about the girl power.
How would you define the job and describe the influence of the DJ?
I love what I do and is just a job like any other job out there.
What are some considerations that goes into deciding which track to play next? What makes two tracks a good fit?
It all depends on the vibe that I want to create. What makes 2 tracks a good fit I use something called a key or see the vibe I want to create.
Let’s say you have a gig coming up tonight. What does your approach look like?
I have to start preparing early enough, get my playlist sorted out, and be at the venue as early as a can.
How would you describe the relationship between your choices and goals as a DJ and the expectations, desires, and feedback of the audience?
I love what I do, not only djing am also so passionate about makeup and soon I’ll be launching a nails parlor/makeup studio. So far I have received so much love-hate kiasi but I believe if you don’t have haters then you aren’t doing it right.
What’s your favorite pass time when you do not have a gig/show?
Practicing my makeup skills, watching movies, listening to music, and spending time with my family
What is your observation about the entertainment industry?
There is no impartiality.
Do you have an embarrassing moment on stage? And if yes how did you play it out?
Yes, I remember there was a time I had a gig at whiskey river on a Tuesday so after I was done playing it was time to leave, and guess what, aki nilislide kwa stairs na heels zangu na kulikuwa na watu the embarazzment ilibidi bouncer anisaidie kuamka.
What wouldn’t you go without? What’s your favorite look?
A necklace that was a gift, I hold it dear to my heart. I really don’t have a favorite look but I love being comfy at all times.
Lastly, what’s one piece of advice you’ll give the upcoming female DJs?
It’s not easy and it not be easy, push your brand, be patient, do you and always have good intentions
