What is diabetes?
Diabetes is a group of diseases that result in too much sugar in the blood.
There are two types of diabetes:
Type 1 diabetes (juvenile diabetes).
It is where the pancreas produces little or no insulin.
It requires a medical diagnosis, but it cannot be cured. It can last for a lifetime and it needs emergency care. It is chronic.
Symptoms.
- Excessive thirst
- Gastrointestinal (nausea or vomiting)
- Fatigue
- Hunger
- Sweating
- Excessive urination
- Blurred vision
- Weight loss.
Treatments.
Maintain normal blood sugar levels through regular monitoring, insulin therapy, diet and exercise.
Type 2 diabetes.
This is the most common type of diabetes. It keeps your body from using insulin, it makes the body resist insulin.
It affects the way the body produces blood sugar.
Symptoms.
- Excessive hunger
- Excessive thirst
- Fatigue
- Weight gain or weight loss
- Poor wound healing
- Blurred vision
- Frequent urination
- Frequent infections.
Treatment.
Insulin therapy, dieting, exercises and good medication.
Who is mostly affected by diabetes?
Diabetes can affect just about anyone, young or old.
Prevention.
- Eat a balanced diet/healthy diet
- Exercise regularly
- Limit your alcohol intake
- Control your blood pressure
- Quit smoking
- Limit takeaway and processed foods.
- Check your risk of diabetes.
