K-hot Dau Akuei born in 2000 popularly known by his stage name K-hot Msanii is a Canadian-based Kenyan rapper, songwriter, performing artist, and entrepreneur.
In an exclusive interview with this writer, K-hot speaks of his musical journey, career, and his future music projects.
The versatile hip-hop artist was born in South Sudan and grew up in a refugee camp Kakuma, Kenya after fleeing the civil war in his native home.
K-hot was enrolled in a primary school in Turkana county together with his siblings and due to the harsh climatic conditions, he faced a lot of challenges adapting to the new environment thus moved to Nyeri county where he joined his secondary education and furthered his studies in Canada.
Looking back, K-hot believes his interest in music struck at a young age. He drew inspiration from various artists like Nelly, the late Esir, Drake, and the Migos. He would sing their songs and rap their lyrics word by word.
While in Canada he attained his masters in food science and agriculture chemistry and immediately chose to chase his musical dream and venture into the music industry.
In 2017, K-hot recorded his first debut single dubbed ‘Moto Bana’ heralding his music career.
“Based on where I was at the time, I confidently rank the song as a hit.” He remarks
The single received a lot of positive responses from everyone who heard it. The reactions spiked a sense of confidence in him and helped steer his dream of being an artist. He officially began his musical career in 2018.
With hard work and determination, K-hot worked tirelessly to make his dream a reality. He recorded more songs that rendered him to being the talk of the town, and getting airplays on both radio and television stations.
“Any other artist that was coming up at the time would hit me up for collaboration.” He says.
The fast-rising artist uses his music as a way to communicate his journey and struggles in life. He is known for his raw and honest lyrics that incorporate themes from his personal experiences and struggles into his music.
The prolific artist has so far worked on many songs among them are; ‘Moto Bana’ Jiki Liki’ ‘Capital’ featuring Exray, ‘Taliban’ featuring Buruklyn Boys and most recently he released ‘Sip or Puff’.
K-hot describes ‘Sip or Puff’ as a feel-good vibe kind of song, that is inspired by friends whose love to party every Friday is filled with celebrations and happiness. The song was recorded by Mavo On The Beat and released in early January. It is available on all streaming platforms.
The force to reckon with is also set to release the highly anticipated Capital remix video. This new version of the original song features Exray, Ssaru, Rekless, Smady Ting, Odi Wa Murang’a and Swatt.
“I want to drop Capital remix video on 14th February as a dedication to all my loyal fans.” He states.
K-hot’s talent and hard work has not gone unnoticed. He has been among the most streamed rappers with over 400,000 monthly listeners and 1.4 million streams on Spotify, collaborated with major top artists like Exray, Ssaru, Rekless, Smady, Petra, Konshens, Charlie Black, and Buruklyn Boys.
He got endorsed by major international brands including Red Bull and Bet 365. With these he has been able to further promote his music and reach new audiences thus solidifying his status.
The award-winning artist has so far founded a record label alias Hot Label Musiq aimed to elevate and restore talent from those who can’t afford it. He has bagged the 2019 awards for digital creation, won the Canadian Provincial Artist of the year in 2021 and New Comer Artist of the year.
Aside from his music career, K-hot is also known for his activism and philanthropic work using his record label to raise awareness about important social issues and continues to push the boundaries of what is possible through his art and activism.
