I used to think closure would end us when I walked through your door that Tuesday night unannounced.
You were standing next to the kitchen sink with a knife in your hand, perhaps you were ready to skin me alive for trespassing. You moved closer towards me and cornered me beside the pantry door, I couldn’t flinch.
You looked me in the eye, perhaps trying to find a glimpse of us. You gripped me by the neck. Gently, you kissed my lips. Smiling. I could see you trying to hide tears from your eyes but you were overwhelmed, prompting you to rest your head on my chest.
I was aghast when this incident unfolded in front of me. The knife in your hand. The kiss. The tears. You had put me into a nervous sweat.
I used to think closure would end us. I had never been this wrong. What was to end we resuscitated our love when I walked through your door that Tuesday night. I was stunned since I had been learning how to unlearn you — with leaden wings.
