We had a pleasure of having a Candid Talk with Nairobi based singer and songwriter Faith Kimani, who made her debut in the music industry with her single Power. She had a passion for music at a very early age and she describes her music as a way of connecting with people, making her mark as a captivating artist who effortlessly combines Afropop, and R&B to create a unique and unforgettable sound. We delve into her journey as an artist, her passion for music, her latest musical release and her aspirations for the future.

Q: Tell us about yourself. Kindly share the part of your story that you feel the public should know about Faith Kimani?

I’m Faith Kimani, a passionate singer and songwriter who loves connecting with people through music. I grew up in Nairobi Kenya and music has always been a significant part of my life. My Musical journey has been quite interesting and intriguing and I’ve gotten to meet and learn through various experiences . I’m
looking forward to what is to come in the future and the whole music industry at large.

Q: How and when did you make our debut in the music industry?

I made my debut in the music industry in 2022 with my first single, Power. This was a few months later after I had done my first collaboration with Favor Mutuma ; lights out. The most interesting part was this was the same time I met my current producer Ty1ne, who is also a singer/songwriter. It was a moment of both excitement and nervousness, but it marked the beginning of a beautiful journey.

Q: Was music what you always wanted to do while growing up?

Absolutely. Ever since I was a child, I’ve been drawn to music. Whether it was singing in the at church or writing my own songs, music was my way of expressing myself and understanding the world around me.

Q: What have been some of your greatest challenges so far?

One of the biggest challenges has been balancing creative freedom with industry expectations and finding the right opportunities. There have been moments of self-doubt and obstacles along the way, but each challenge has been a learning experience.

Q: What have been your achievements?

I’ve had the honor of releasing several singles, collaborating with talented artists, and performing on various stages. I have had the pleasure working with various artists such as Prayzzz ; a pan African artists from Nigeria and my talented artists /friends Ty1ne and Favor Mutuma from Nairobi Kenya. One of my proudest achievements is the positive impact my music has had on listeners, who often share how my songs have touched their lives.

Q: How would you describe the music that you typically create?

My music is a blend of soulful melodies and heartfelt lyrics. I aim to create songs that resonate with listeners, offering both comfort, intimacy and imaginative freedom.

Q: Speaking of music, you currently released a single dubbed ‘Perfect’ featuring Ty1ne. What message did you hope your fans take home from the song?

When we started writing this song, one question loomed large: “Is there anyone perfect?” This was more than a rhetorical musing; it became the cornerstone of our creative process. “Perfect” tells a story of love that is real and unfiltered, a love that doesn’t conform to societal norms but instead embraces
individuality. We aimed to create a sound that mirrors the complexity and beauty of real relationships with a message of hope, acceptance, and celebration of the imperfectly perfect love that we all aspire to find and cherish.

Q: Describe your creative process when you write new music?

My creative process usually starts with an idea or a feeling I want to express. I often write lyrics first, then develop the melody. Collaboration with producers and other artists also plays a key
role in shaping the final sound.

Q: You’ve gotten to perform on different musical stages. Did you have any butterflies while performing?

Definitely! Even after many performances, I still get butterflies. It’s a mix of excitement and nerves, but once I’m on stage, it all transforms into energy and connection with the audience.

Q: Where have you performed? What are your favorite and least favorite venues?

I’ve performed at a variety of venues, from intimate cafes to larger concert halls. My favorite venues are those where the audience is close and engaged, creating a more intimate and personal atmosphere. I don’t have a least favorite, but sometimes technical issues maybe challenging.

Q: What is your favorite song to perform?

My favorite song to perform is Power. It has a special place in my heart because I wrote it at a point where I was still trying to discover my self as an artist and it was more of a song to encourage myself to stand my ground and take my place in the world.

Q: One can say you have an amazing voice. Do you have a voice coach, or does it come naturally when singing?

Thank you! At the moment I do not have a vocal coach but I would love to thank my friend Reginald Alenga who taught me all I needed to know about music . He layed a strong foundation and I believe ever since I’ve fully immersed myself in the art . Aside from that I use online vocal practices, such as Cheryl Potter and I also love learning from other legends such as Miriam Makeba and Amy Winehouse. Natural talent plays a role, but consistent training and practice are crucial.

Q: Who would you most like to collaborate with on your next project?

There are so many talented artists I’d love to work with. Collaborating with Tetu Shani, would be one of my favorite experiences, I believe, as his style is uniquely crafted and I find him quite brilliant, from how he writes and how he delivers his art.

Q: Which famous musicians do you admire?

I believe I have a broad niche when it comes to who I listen to. I admire artists like Amy Winehouse, Jessie Reyez, Etta James, 6lack and Patrick Watson. All these artists are quite different but very similar , ranging from how they evoke emotion and logic in their craft, it’s mind-blowing!

Q: How do you feel the Internet has impacted the music business?

The Internet has revolutionized the music industry by making it easier for artists to share their work and connect with fans. It has also provided more opportunities for independent artists to thrive without traditional industry gatekeepers.

Q: If you could change anything about the industry, what would it be?

I’d love to see more support for emerging artists and greater transparency in revenue distribution. The industry can be tough to navigate, and more resources for new talent would be beneficial.

Q: Do you have any advice for aspiring artists or songwriters wanting to do music as a career?

Stay true to yourself and have a strong moral compass. It’s important to work hard, be persistent, and not be afraid of rejection. Surround yourself with supportive people and keep honing your craft.

Q: What’s next for Faith Kimani? Should we expect other new music from you this year?

I’m currently working on new music and exploring different sounds. You can definitely expect more singles and possibly an E.P later this year. I’m excited to share more of my journey with everyone!
