Unkorupt is a music artist who has a passion for music and made his debut in 2018 in the Kenya Musician Industry. His preferred genre of music is more African-based as he claims he likes to maintain his roots. Unkorupt got to release a new E.P dubbed ‘For You’ and we caught up with him via mail to know more about his E.P and know how his musical journey has been.
How best would you describe yourself?
Well, I’m really passionate about my music. If it’s not about music please count me out. I would pick it over anything apart from my family.
Who inspired you to make music?
My big brother TY1NE is actually the one who inspired me to do music. I’ve seen him grow consistently. From making beats by drumming on countertops to the amazing work he does now, not forgetting the Hit House collective consisting of PrayzzZ and Tweeztwer.
Did you always want to be a music artist?
Definitely, I would say I’m like all other artists, I started doing it when I was young haha…But I started to take it seriously when I was in highschool that’s where I started to brush up on my writing skills. I was actually a rapper back then, my mates can attest to this haha.
Kindly share the part of your story you feel the public should know about?
Why do I feel like you are putting me on the spot…So, my late father was a musician back then and I felt this was a journey I wanted to pursue. I don’t know why I feel like it is my obligation, but I’ll definitely do it.
How and when did you make your debut in the music industry?
My debut into the music industry I would say was in 2018 but I took a little break because of personal reasons.
How long have you been in the music business?
This would have been my 3rd year in the music business but due to the break, this is my 2nd year.
How would you describe your music?
Music has no boundaries. I let it metamorphosize into anything and that’s depending on the beat I’m using and the headspace I’m in. but generally I would call it Afro (Pop & Soul).
What draws you to your preferred genre?
Being African. I love to maintain the sound of my roots.
You just released a new EP dubbed ‘For You’ tell us how you came about it?
I was actually in a relationship when creating the first three songs, I would say “love was in the air” haha…And I was blessed with a collaboration from Kenyan-based Nigerian artist PrayzzZ which was just pure vibes.
Why this E.P? Why now?
If you listen to E.P there are different types of genres each with their specific message and we felt like everybody who would listen to the songs would relate to something. Why now? we just felt it was time.
What has been the most challenging aspect of your current E.P release?
That would be not knowing how people were going to receive and resonate with it.
Do you have any other plans relating to this release? A video? Online Shows? Gigs?
All those are in the works, it’s just a matter of time.
Who would you most collaborate with?
I would collaborate with every artist if I had the chance to because I appreciate and love what they are doing but the one I would most likely want to have a song with is Blinky Bill, that guy is different!
What do you enjoy most being an artist?
For me, it’s the feedback from my fans and people who listen to my music and knowing that people appreciate and love what I’m doing.
What is your biggest musical challenge?
My challenge has been getting my music widely listened to, especially here in Kenya.
How do you advertise your music?
Most of my advertisements are done through online promotions but my team is looking to diversify into other avenues the more we grow.
In your own opinion, how do you feel the internet has impacted the music business?
The Internet, wow! It has definitely impacted the music business in a good way because you don’t have to be signed to a big record label for people across the globe to listen to your music like the old days and you earn from the work you put out too, the internet has definitely been a game-changer.
What can we expect from you in the coming months?
All I can say is expect newer and better music from me as well as the Hit House collective.
If you were talking to a younger version of you, what advice would you give yourself?
‘Make your pain be your motivation’
Lastly if you could change anything about the industry, what would it be?
I would advocate for artists to support each other as well as create opportunities for those upland coming.
