Meet Leon Magadi, a photographer and one of the three founding people who started Drift30 Photography, a brand that he claims is far different from what other photographers are doing. We caught up with him via Whatsapp to hear how his journey has been.
Tell is about yourself?
My name is Leon Magadi. I’m a photographer. I love traveling and I’m more into arts.
Are you a detail oriented person?
Yes, I am a Detail-oriented. I love doing things to my level best… Like I have to achieve what I set my mind to… For me, that’s the details.
How did the name Drift30 come about?
It came from three people who started it… So “DRIFT” means doing photography differently from others… Drifting away from what other people are doing.
30 comes from the 3 of us who started it. So instead of 3, we did 30 just for uniqueness but I’m sure one day we will get to 30 people.
When did you start photography?
I started photography 4 years ago.
Why did you choose to pursue a career as a photographer?
I started photography as a joke I didn’t know it would turn out to be a big thing… I only bought a camera for my assignments in school and this is where I knew I was passionate about this.
How long have you been a photographer?
This is my fourth year in photography.
Whose work has influenced you most?
My work has influenced me the most. I always believe I can do better each and every day.
What do you enjoy shooting the most? And Why? Or what would you say is your speciality?
I love shooting everything. It just depends on where I do my shoots from.
What are your values as a photographer?
I value my principles. Humility is part of what makes me achieve what I do right now.
How do you make people feel comfortable in front of the camera?
Actually, we direct our clients. And this makes them so comfortable. I’d say your approach to your clients is what will make them feel comfortable in front of the camera.
What would you say is your photographic style?
I do not have a specific style… It’ll depend on where I’ll be shooting from. That’s what will dictate my shooting style then.
What type of editing software do you like to use for your completed photographs and what do you like about it?
I do use photoshop and I like the fact that I can manipulate my photos in the same software without transferring to any other software.
What’s the most important equipment that a photographer should have no matter where you’re going to be working?
Just ensure you have your camera and proper lighting.
Which is your favorite lens? Why?
I have a couple of lens that are favorite. It just depends on where I’ll be shooting from.
Among your works, which one is your favorite? Why?
This is now my favorite work as at now.
As a photographer what are your career goals?
I have to achieve a lot in the next few years. I want to do extra professional product photography with lots of equipment
Where do you see yourself in the near future?
My future scares me a lot because what I have in mind is bigger than what I can imagine.
What advice can you give aspiring photographers?
All I can tell them is every step matters. Those small wins is what will make you great at the end of it all. Learn to appreciate the small steps you make and keep working hard towards achieving them.
