Meet Lewis Kimathi aka (DoneDeal Visual) one of the many reknown street photographers in Kenya with whooping followers of 54k on Instagram. He started photography in 2018 and to him, photography is a passion, a hobby, and a way of expressing myself in an artistic way. We caught up with him, over Whatsapp, for a few questions.

Tell us about yourself?

My name is Lewis Kimathi. I’m a student at TUK and a freelance photographer and videographer based in Nairobi.

How did the name Donedeal Visual come about?

I got the idea from an American producer named Dun Deal who happened to be my favorite producer at that time.

Are you a detail oriented person?

Yes I am, because I believe that a single detail can change a whole perspevtive.

How long have you been a photographer?

I started in April 2018 so that is approximately 4 years.

What type of cameras do you shoot with?

I started out with Nikon then recently bought Sony.

Which is your favorite lens? Why?

My tamron 28-75mm. Because it is wide and sharp making it appropriate for my style of photography and helps in videos too.

Among your works, which one is your favorite? Why?

Haha. They are all my favorite.

What kind of tools do you use for post processing?

I use Photoshop, Lightroom and Da Vinci Resolve.

What does photography mean to you?

To me photography is a passion, a hobby and a way of expressing myself in an artistic way.

In your opinion what makes good picture stand out from the average?

The composition of the picture, that is, for example, the angle the photographer used to take the image, the editing, and also the lighting.

What inspires you?

Other great photographers who have made it in the industry. For example Osborne Macharia and Peter McKinnon.

Whose work has influenced you most?

Peter McKinnon because his bucket shot was used in the Canadian currency.

How do you direct clients during the shoot?

I mostly use Pinterest to get ideas.

How do you connect with difficult clients?

I try to be humble and avoid arguments.

How do you make people comfortable in front of the camera?

Sometimes I make jokes. I also play music and tell them they look good.

What are your values as a photographer?

You have to be creative, have an eye for detail and most of all have patience.

How would you describe your photography style?

I shoot mostly portraits, events and street photography.

How do you educate yourself to take better pictures?

I learn from other photographers and YouTube.

What is the most difficult part of being a photographer?

Dealing with clients who are not willing to pay or clients who undervalue your work.

What is the most rewarding part of being a photographer for you?

Getting paid doing what you love, making people happy and also receiving good comments from my work.

What do you like least about being a photographer?

Photography gear is expensive, editing is tiresome and the editing softwares require payment.

What do you like most about being a photographer?

I get to do what I love and enjoy.

Donedeal does a great job,he really does,his photos stand to be unique,I have hed several shoot with him but I love what he does.
