Dive into his world in this exclusive interview as we explore his journey, collaborations, and what’s next for this musical powerhouse.
Can you share with us your journey into music? What first sparked your interest and made you decide to pursue it as a career?
I began doing music because I come from a musical family and had been encouraged to sing by my big sister. However, I didn’t have interest in doing music as a career. What changed was the fact that I got accepted into my university of choice and tasked myself with starting a career that would give me the financial capacity to pay my way through school. That being said, I began my career and grew to love it more and more every day.
You’re known for your versatility, crossing from R&B and pop to Afrobeats and alt-pop. What is it about these genres that resonates with you, and why have you chosen to explore such a wide range?
Music is a powerful tool for conveying emotions and telling stories. Different genres evoke distinct moods and atmospheres, allowing artists to express themselves in a variety of ways. As a songwriter, I’ve always been fascinated by the ability of music to shape our perceptions and experiences.
Just like in film, where different genres are used to tell different kinds of stories, music can be tailored to fit specific purposes. Whether I’m writing a heartfelt ballad, an energetic pop anthem, or a thought-provoking indie rock track, I strive to choose the genre that best complements the message I want to convey.
My own musical journey has been greatly influenced by my love of music as a fan. Growing up, I explored various genres and discovered how they could evoke different emotions and perspectives. This experience has helped me develop a deep understanding of the power of music and how to use it to connect with my audience.
By carefully considering the mood, message, and target audience, I aim to create music that is both meaningful and impactful. Whether I’m writing a song about love, loss, or social issues, I want to use my craft to inspire, entertain, and make a positive difference in the world.
Your EP Mellow Dramatic has such a unique sound. Can you tell us about the inspiration behind it? What themes or experiences shaped the project?
“Mellow Dramatic” was born out of a deeply personal experience: the end of my first long-term relationship. The heartbreak and introspection that followed were catalysts for creating this project. Writing these songs became a form of therapy, helping me process my emotions and find healing.
Some tracks served as cathartic outlets for anger and frustration, while others explored themes of self-reflection and personal growth. Through the songwriting process, I learned to accept my flaws, embrace my strengths, and strive for a better version of myself.
The EP’s title emerged near the end of the project. I wanted it to reflect the duality of my personality and serve as a reminder to stay true to myself even as I continue to evolve. I’ve always been a mix of mellow and dramatic, calm and energetic, and I believe that this dichotomy has shaped who I am as a person and as an artist.
As my career progresses and I achieve new milestones, I’m committed to maintaining my authenticity. I believe that staying true to oneself is essential for long-term success and fulfillment. By embracing my unique blend of mellow and dramatic, I hope to inspire others to be their own true selves, no matter what challenges they may face.
You’ve had the chance to collaborate with artists like Lisa Oduor, June Gachui, and Maya Amolo. What have these collaborations taught you, and are there any other artists you’re hoping to work with in the future?
These collaborations have taught me many things, but I can say what I have resonated with the most is having standards that are high and pursuing them with laser focus. In future I would love to work with Lojay, JP Saxe, Lizzy Mcalpine and Kehlani.
Your stage presence is captivating. How do you prepare for performances, and what’s been your most memorable performance so far? Are there any venues or festivals you dream of performing at?
On performance days I wake up, have some water, steam, do vocal exercises and warm ups, eat well and speak a lot less than normal. I spend my day embodying my set and envisioning it as I have done in the rehearsals prior to the show date. My most memorable show was the Anthony Hamilton one I think. I also would love to perform in Stadiums during the East African held Cup of Nations in a few years and other stadiums across the world like the O2.
Having opened for legends like Anthony Hamilton, how has performing alongside such artists impacted your growth as a performer and musician?
It made me more aware of what I am capable of and what it takes to be my best self in that way.
Your music touches on deep and sometimes controversial topics. How do you approach writing songs that are both heartfelt and relatable?
Writing about deep and controversial topics requires a delicate balance between personal expression and universal relatability. I believe that authenticity is paramount. By sharing my own experiences and emotions honestly, I aim to create music that connects with others on a profound level.
I often find that many of us are navigating similar challenges and emotions, albeit in different contexts. By being transparent about my own struggles, I hope to shed light on shared experiences and offer a sense of solidarity. Music can serve as a powerful tool for connection and understanding, and I strive to use my songwriting to bridge gaps and foster empathy.
Through vulnerability and authenticity, I aim to create music that not only resonates with listeners but also sparks meaningful conversations and inspires positive change.
Where do you see yourself in the next five years? Are there any specific goals or milestones you hope to achieve in your musical journey?
I think in 5 years I will have collaborated with people from all over the world. I think I will have made a name for myself internationally and will be traveling more because of it. At home, between my friends and I, we will have long established our own projects and helped each other grow and sustain them, therefore sustaining each other. My brand will also have grown in leaps and bounds in 5 years.
