Derrick Munene is a visual artist based in Nairobi Kenya, We caught up with him to hear how his journey has been in Kenyan Art Industry

1)Tell us a bit about yourself?

My name is Derrick Munene a visual artist based in Nairobi, Kenya

2)When did you discover your passion for art?

I discovered I can draw in my early stages. I think 4 years old

3)Who inspires your artwork?

I get my inspiration from every day to day activities, my imagination and experiences

4)Which artwork that you’ve ever done is your favorite?

I don’t a favorite one.

5)How many celebrities have you drawn so far?

More than 10

6)What’s the most important tool that every artist should have?

Creativity, observation

7)Tell us about your brand, M_nine?

M_nine is an artistic name I came up with to separate my work and personal life

8)Which artist do you look up to?

Patrick Mukabi.

9)What has been your breakthrough moment ever since you began art?

Being able to display my work in an exhibition among other established artists

10)Where do you draw your inspiration from?

Human activity

11)How has art changed your life in general?

Being able to see the world in a different way. And also understanding human forms, behaviour, body language, colour

12)Talk about your achievements?

Nominated for Sodeka Awards 2020

affordable art show and Manjano art show

13)What are some challenges you face as an artist?

Having irregular payment patterns.. You have to market your work to earn. And art equipments are expensive

14)Apart from art, what else do you do?

Am an interior designer, and furniture designer

15)What’s your next project?

Working on a art series

16)What advice can you give an aspiring artist?

Put more work, be willing to learn, visit artist’s studios and art shows.sketch everyday
