In Our Discussion Isle, we have Victor Mutuma aka BroWhoCleans, well if you’re not aware who BroWhoCleans is by now then you haven’t yet come across his TikTok page. The thumbs up cheering sign as his signature symbolizes the fun his initiative has of having a safe and clean environment. What started as a small campaign has now turned into a community of people who turn up for cleanups in the streets of Nairobi. In this Interview BroWhoCleans narrates to us how his journey of cleaning up the environment around him has been and what inspired him to start this initiative.

Briefly tell us something about yourself and how you came up with the name that’s known by many BroWhoCleans?

My name is Victor Mutuma, the Founder of BroWhoCleans, an initiative that strives to have a safe, clean and healthy environment for us all by having regular clean ups in Nairobi Streets with volunteers and emphasizing on No Littering.

What inspired you to specialize in environmental clean ups?

What inspired me to do clean ups is the fact that i witnessed a guy casually littering and took it upon myself to be the change to do something about it, hence cleaning the environment and was hopeful other people who care for their environment would follow in the good cause.

Do you arrange a program of the cleanup before the due date?

I arrange clean ups up to three weeks to a month prior to the clean-up, a lot is involved from planning of the resources that include gloves, trash bags, refreshments, how the trash collected will be picked and volunteers to make the day a success.

I’ve noticed that your clean up usually happens on Saturday? What time does the cleanup start?

Yes, clean ups usually happen on Saturdays from 9am, but the moment I sort out some financial constraints to have massive clean ups, the plan is to have three clean ups per week.

Can you describe a situation where you had to a cleanup in adverse condition?

Ha-ha! We got rained on heavy while cleaning, it was fun because it was a new experience for the volunteers who showed up to clean.

What safety protocols do you follow when handling waste during cleanups?

During clean ups, I make sure volunteers have Gloves on, trash bags, masks, Litter pickers and good comfortable shoes.

What keeps you motivated to keep picking up waste, even when it might seem overwhelming?

What keeps me motivated is the impact BroWhoCleans gives to the society, Clean ups ensure a safe, clean and healthy environment for us all and also help individuals especially those who finished university and are depressed from trying to figure out what to do next, they look forward to BroWhoCleans clean ups to keep their minds busy.

Describe a time when your efforts to clean up the environment made a tangible difference. How did it make you feel?

The very first clean up i did with 6 volunteers, we collected 51 trash bags from an open field in High-Rise area that was very dirty with trash everywhere. The open field was used by everyone for sports and other kinds of activities. After the clean-up, the people around the field area were very grateful for BroWhoCleans and the impact that people got to enjoy a clean space.

Beyond picking up trash, what other actions do you take to advocate for a healthier environment?

Beyond picking trash, the plan is to set out campaigns to teach especially primary and high school kids the effects of littering, workshops to keep on advocating for a clean space for us all.

Where can people register if they want to participate on cleanups or be a part of your initiative?

If you want to be part of the initiative and participate in clean ups, you can Text or call 0711281774 or DM and follow my social media handles ‘browhocleans’ on TikTok and Instagram. Let’s all strive to have a safe, clean and healthy environment for us all 😁👍.
