50 Years of Hip-Hop: A Look Back at the Evolution of the Genre

Hip-hop is one of the most popular and influential genres of music in the world, and it is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year. The genre has come a long way since its humble beginnings, and it has evolved to encompass a wide range of styles and sounds.

Hip-hop originated as a way for African American to express themselves and to challenge the status quo. The genre was initially centered around DJing, MCing, and breakdancing, but it quickly expanded to include other elements such as graffiti and fashion.

Today, hip-hop is one of the most popular genres of music in the world. It has crossed over into other cultures and has influenced a wide range of other genres, such as pop, rock, and electronic music.

In Kenya we took this opportunity to celebrate the Hip-Hop culture in our country in different venues with UnKut Africa hosting The Blocc Party at Diamond Plaza in Westlands. The performance lineup boasted of Kenya’s finest rappers such as Abbas Kubaff, and the distinguished Kalamashaka. It was an enthralling evening of Hip-Hop music, complemented by engaging activities. At The Mall Basement, Westlands Jadili Session also played host to Kalamashaka as they had an open mic engagement session about the Hip-Hop culture in Kenya.

On Saturday all paths lead to the A-List Events party at Urban Heart as guys came together to celebrate Hip-Hop and Rnb Throwback. It was a lively session as guys came in dressed in their throwback outfit and the DJ embarked us on a throwback musical journey back to when music was music. Those who turned up for the event also got engage in other activities such as board games, dance challenges, and quizzes.
