THE TALK

Spread the love

In as much as we love to talk about Mental health, do we look at our physical health? How many times do you get tested for HIV/AIDS and sexually transmitted infections yearly? We are at the age where it’s too late for the talk with our parents but most of us never really got THE TALK.

Do you tell yourself that yes I am sexually active and I have to check up on my health? There is a lot of diseases or infections we can acquire from our sexual activities. Most of us get too indulged in the fun that we forget “Too much of something is Poisonous” You need to keep in check with yourself or you will find yourself lost and come back to reality when things go south.

If I had someone to sit me down when my sexual activeness kicked in, I think my life would have turned out differently like I would have been more self-aware. I had to learn some things for myself. I watched the show ‘Shuga’ and I wondered why my parents never really wanted me to watch the show. Typical African parent. I found it very educational, and even if it was from ‘kitambo’ I can’t say that life is any different now from then. If I was unable to talk to my child about these things I would let them watch any sex-ed.

You know an infected person does not carry a banner around saying they are infected or some of them don’t even know because they do not test. Some of them are afraid of the stigma because you know how we humans tend to be. But if you are aware of your status and you still want to indulge in sexual activities, isn’t it right to let your partner know your status so that they can choose? But it’s really hard opening up to someone but I’d prefer you tell me about it rather than I hating you later and playing the blame game. There is a treatment called PrEP which in full means Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis it’s meaning is the use of anti-HIV medication, that keeps HIV-negative people from becoming infected. This is when you have decided to accept your partner’s status and you can use the medication which is safer and healthier.

Even in a case of sexual abuse, one is always given the drug to prevent the disease from catching up on one.

Let’s get a breather and come to the Sexually Transmitted Diseases or Infections. Sex is good that I can’t lie if there is anyone who doesn’t like sex ‘huyo ni mtoto wa shetani’ but we have not followed the guidelines or the instructions given to us by the BIG GUY up there. But now it’s too late because we see kids as early as 16 years getting pregnant. But why do people choose to have multiple partners and they don’t even have the balls to be careful. You have a sneaky link, main chick, side dish, ‘mumamaz na mubabaz eish! Your platter is so full Huogopi kukufa?’

This song Nairobi by Bensoul has too much truth in it. Even ‘mandazis’ were never shared like that. The bitter truth is you are going to be wallowing in tears and lamenting I wish I never did this or I wish I knew. The regrets come later when you don’t want to come to terms with what the results are. A husband comes home and infects his pregnant wife, the lady goes for her clinics only to find out that they are positive and once you go there you can never come back. In as much as we love the joy that comes with sex, we should be responsible for ourselves and the people around us. Especially now that we are in the month of Love. It has also been a wake-up call for me. Let us not be having unprotected sex with everyone without being aware of our status ruin our life. And Staying safe is not only in COVID but everywhere. You should NOT risk your life just for a 3 minutes pleasure.

And for the ones who are positive, it’s may seem like you are in your own detached world but you are not. This is not the end of the world it is just a page break if you know what I mean. Happy Valentine’s my Loves, get to treat yourself like the kings and queens you are.

I LOVE YOU, BY THE WAY!
